1930s and 50s Reminiscence at Lulworth House Residential Care Home

Last week we all came together to enjoy looking at memorabilia from the 1930s here at Lulworth House Residential Care Home.

The session linked our whole lounge with laughter and chatter as we looked at old photos and discussed our memories of films. Our residents enjoyed sharing their thoughts and some fantastic discussions developed, including:

  • Jokes about the ‘before and after swim look’ with costumes made of wool
  • Controversy on the idea of wearing ‘real fur’ clothing
  • Charleston dresses, complimented with long cigarettes!
  • Flower dress designs that came back into fashion not long ago
  • Deeply meaningful romantic films
  • The poor station masters and their attire
  • The fact that cars were not allowed by the beaches
  • The war and Adolf Hitler

Recreation & Well-Being Champion Tracy recognised a dress which her mother replicated for her when she was aged ten, for her friend and her to wear to dance and sing ‘Sisters, sisters there were never such devoted sisters‘ in a tap dancing competition!

We also focused on the 1950s, as most of our residents would have been in their twenties and thirties at that time and therefore relate fully to memorabilia from that era.

A thoroughly good time was had by all, with some fascinating discussions.
