We were thrilled to celebrate a very special occasion at Lulworth House Residential Care Home on Friday 16 May – our wonderful resident Betty’s 105th birthday.
Betty’s life
Born in Streatham in south London, Betty was an only child – her father making a living as a sign writer while her mother was a homemaker. In her youth, Betty was part of the Girls’ Brigade before achieving her dream career in dressmaking.
She met Arthur – a civil servant who spent most of the war abroad working in telecommunications. The couple married and welcomed their daughter Ann, spending a lot of time as a family travelling together, including a three month stay in Australia.
Today, Betty has two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and her daughter Ann enjoys visiting her at our Home. She loves Wimbledon, singing, and classic musicals including The Sound of Music and Carousel. She can often be seen cuddling her favourite teddies.
Party time!
As such a Wimbledon fan, it was only right that we themed her special birthday around tennis. We decked out our lounge with ‘Game, Set, Match‘ decorations and some big 105 balloons, and our talented Nutrition Lead Katja created Betty a magnificent Wimbledon cake.
We hosted a tennis themed tea party which featured a treat trolley of sweets, cakes and Betty’s favourite – chocolate buttons!
She received lots of wonderful cards, including one from King Charles and Queen Camilla, and everyone enjoyed celebrating with her.
Our Home Manager Catherine commented: “Betty is such a wonderful character, and it was a privilege to celebrate her 105th birthday in such a special way. The Wimbledon-themed tea party brought so much joy to everyone, from the vibrant decorations to the delicious tennis-inspired treats. It was an absolute pleasure to see her surrounded by friends, enjoying a day filled with smiles and laughter.”
Wishing you many happy returns Betty, with lots of love from all your friends at Lulworth House.
